Everyone shops for a chicken water heater on price. The number that decides whether the water is still liquid at 5 F is watts against the volume of water being held.

On the number that decides the category. 80 W across 5 gallons is about 16 W per gallon, which is more than double what the Gsbomzap base manages under the same volume. For a typical freezing night that is the right side of the line.

Two reasons, and one of them is safety rather than performance.

The K&H 250W Deicer is the only unit in this guide that states a safety listing. That is a mains powered device sitting in water inside a wooden building full of dry bedding, and a stated listing means the design has been assessed against a standard rather than just assembled. For $21.56, the cheapest unit on this page, that is a good position to be in.

The second reason is fit. A stock tank de-icer drops into a tank you already own, floats or sits submerged, and works in plastic, rubber or metal. If you water a mixed group or a larger flock from a trough, none of the poultry founts in this guide are relevant and this is the category that is.

The construction backs it up. A full protective cage keeps the element off the tank wall, which is what stops a de-icer melting through a plastic tub. The cord clip holds the lead where you fix it instead of letting it slide into the water.

Why the Farm Innovators 16 Gal wins this category

Volume. Sixteen gallons is more than three times what any other unit in this guide holds, and for ducks that is not a luxury. Ducks drink heavily, they carry water back and forth, and they foul an open container faster than hens do. A small fount in a duck run in winter is a daily chore at best.

The ratio holds up better than it looks. 200 W across 16 gallons is roughly 12 W per gallon, which is lower than the Vlnujuroq figure. Thermal mass is why that is fine. A large body of water stores a great deal of heat and gives it up slowly, so it takes far longer to reach freezing in the first place. The same 12 W per gallon in a 3 gallon container would be marginal.

The element is built into the wall of the bucket, hidden and out of the drinking area, and Farm Innovators states it is replaceable. On a $99.89 item that is a meaningful design decision, because the element is the part that fails.

Living with the Farm Innovators 16 Gal

Site it before you fill it. Sixteen gallons of water is about 133 lb, and the bucket is 24 in across. Put it on something firm and level, and put it where you want it for the whole winter, because you will not be shifting it once it is full.

Expect to share. Farm Innovators aims this at horses, sheep and other large animals, so it suits a mixed yard. For ducks specifically it is a good height and a good size, but it is deep, and a deep open container is a drowning risk for ducklings and small chicks. Keep young birds away from it.

Clean it more often than the volume suggests. Ducks will muddy 16 gallons quickly, and a large bucket is not self cleaning just because it takes a while to empty.

Where the Farm Innovators 16 Gal falls short

The scale itself is a problem for a small flock. Standing water in a coop goes stale and gets fouled, and a handful of hens drinking a couple of quarts a day will not turn over 16 gallons before it needs dumping. You would be heating and then discarding most of it.

The depth deserves a second mention. An open 16 gallon bucket in a run with ducklings or young chicks is a genuine drowning hazard, not a theoretical one.

That gives you a real ranking rather than a price list. Gsbomzap is about 7 W per gallon. Farm Innovators 16 Gal is roughly 12 W per gallon. Vlnujuroq is about 16 W per gallon. Lilyang is roughly 83 W per gallon. The K&H de-icer is 250 W with no fixed volume, because it drops into whatever tank you own and the maker publishes a zone chart to pick the wattage from. The Farm Innovators De-Icer is sized to nipple drinker buckets rather than to a stated capacity.

After that we looked at the thermostat, the construction, whether a safety listing is named, and the cord length. Only K&H states a safety listing. Only three state a cord length at all.

Two claims are recorded and not repeated. Farm Innovators lists 150 W in the title of its de-icer and 200 W in the bullet points for the same product. Gsbomzap says its base stops heating above 25 degrees and reheats below 0 degrees without naming a scale, which does not make sense in Fahrenheit or in Celsius.

What actually matters in a chicken water heater

Watts per gallon, the number that decides it

Wattage on its own tells you the electricity bill. Wattage against volume tells you whether the water is liquid.

A small heater under a large fount is the common mistake, and it is easy to make because the listing headline reads as a capacity rather than a limit. A 35 W base rated for waterers up to 5 gallons will do something useful on a night that dips just below freezing. Fill it to 5 gallons and put it out at 5 F and you have a partly frozen fount with a warm patch at the bottom.

Volume works both ways though. A large mass of water carries a lot of stored heat and gives it up slowly, which is why the 16 gallon bucket at roughly 12 W per gallon is not in trouble the way a 3 gallon container at the same ratio would be. Every unit here claims some thermostatic control, and the useful detail is in what temperatures they name.

Lilyang is specific: on at 35 F, off at 70 F, and the maker describes it as melting ice rather than warming water. Vlnujuroq is adjustable from 32 F to 122 F with an LED display. K&H cycles automatically and holds water just above freezing. Farm Innovators says thermostatically controlled on both units without naming a temperature.

An adjustable range up to 122 F is a specification, not a suggestion. Nobody should be heating drinking water to that. Set it just above freezing and leave it.

Cord length and the outlet

This is the part people discover on installation day.

Vlnujuroq gives 9.84 ft, the longest stated here. Lilyang gives 6.5 ft. Gsbomzap gives 5.8 ft. The other three state nothing. Six feet does not reach across a run, so most keepers end up on an extension lead.

Say it plainly, because this is a mains device in a wooden building full of dry bedding. The lead must be outdoor rated, it must be on a GFCI protected outlet, and both the cable and the connection should be off the floor and out of the bedding. Clip it along a wall or a rafter. Do not run a household indoor extension out to the coop.

What the unit is designed to sit in

These are not interchangeable. A heated base goes under a fount you already own. A complete heated waterer replaces the fount. A submersible de-icer drops into a tank. A nipple bucket de-icer is shaped for a bucket with nipples in the wall.

Two honest negatives: 16 W per gallon is modest for a welded stainless drum that sheds heat to the air around it, and the nine drinking windows are the first place ice will form. The adjustable range topping out at 122 F is a setting nobody should use.

How many watts do I need to keep chicken water from freezing?

Work it out as watts per gallon rather than looking at the headline wattage. Around 7 W per gallon, which is what a 35 W base under a 5 gallon fount gives you, is a mild frost device. Somewhere around 15 W per gallon copes with an ordinary freezing night. If your winter regularly sits in the single digits Fahrenheit, you want far more, which is what the Lilyang delivers by putting 250 W into only 3 gallons. Also remember a bigger body of water gives up heat more slowly, so a large tank needs fewer watts per gallon than a small one.

Is a heated base or a complete heated waterer better?

A base is cheaper and reuses the fount you already own, and that is a genuine saving. The catch is the ratio.
