What actually matters in a coop heater

Radiant panels, not air heating

A coop is a ventilated box, and it has to be. Trying to raise the air temperature inside it is expensive and largely futile, and the more successful you are the more humidity you trap.

Do chickens actually need a heated coop in winter?

In most of the United States, no. Adult birds in full feather tolerate temperatures well below freezing, and they generate significant heat themselves when roosting together. The genuine risks in winter are damp air, draughts at roost level and frozen water, none of which a heater fixes and one of which it can make worse. Heat is worth considering for extreme cold, for birds that are old, ill, thin or mid-moult, and for coops that are genuinely draughty.

Are heat lamps safe in a chicken coop?

They are the highest-risk piece of equipment commonly used in poultry keeping. A suspended lamp can be knocked by a bird, the clamp can slip, and a hot bulb landing in dry bedding will start a fire very quickly. Flat radiant panels mounted to a wall remove that failure mode entirely, run at surface temperatures that will not ignite shavings, and cost about the same. If you currently use a heat lamp, replacing it is the single best safety change you can make.

Will heating the coop cause frostbite?

It can, which surprises people. Frostbite on combs and wattles is driven by moisture as much as by temperature. Birds exhale a lot of water vapour, and warming a coop without increasing ventilation raises humidity, which then condenses on the coldest surfaces including combs. A cold, dry, well-ventilated coop produces less frostbite than a warm, sealed, humid one. Ventilation above roost height is more protective than heat.

What wattage coop heater do I need?

Less than you think, because you are warming birds rather than air. A 100 to 150 watt radiant panel suits a small coop of up to about 20 square feet, 200 watts suits a medium coop, and above roughly 40 square feet you want a larger panel area rather than simply more watts. Adding enough power to genuinely raise the air temperature in a ventilated coop is neither practical nor desirable.

Should a coop heater run all night?

Only when it is genuinely cold, which is why a thermostat matters more than wattage. Without one, a heater runs identically on a mild November night and a hard January one, wasting electricity and unnecessarily drying the coop. Either buy a panel with a thermostat built in or add a plug-in thermostatic socket set to switch on near freezing, which costs about twenty dollars.

What is more important than a heater for winter chickens?

Three things, in order. Ventilation above roost height, so moist air leaves without blowing across the birds. Dry bedding, deep enough to insulate the floor and absorb droppings. And liquid water, because a bird that cannot drink stops eating and loses condition fast. A heated waterer will do more for your flock in winter than a coop heater will, at a similar price.
