Every product on this page is a radiant barrier. Aluminium foil bonded to a bubble or foam core, sold in a roll. That matters more than any of the numbers on the packaging, because a radiant barrier only reflects heat across an air space. Staple it flat to the plywood and the foil is touching the wood, heat crosses by conduction instead, and you have paid $30 for a shiny vapour barrier.

Almost nobody checks this. Buyers compare R numbers, and R numbers on foil products describe an assembly, not the roll. The install decides the result far more than the roll does. Batten the material out on furring strips so the shiny face has a gap, and the same roll starts earning its keep.

Once you accept that, the field stops competing on claims and starts competing on price per square foot. That is a fair comparison, and it reorders the shelf. The cheapest sticker price here is not the cheapest material, and the $24.99 MRPAPA costs roughly twice as much per square foot as the $139.95 SmartSHIELD 5mm.

One more thing before you buy. Insulating a coop without adding ventilation makes condensation and ammonia worse, not better. Warm damp air needs a route out, and foil is a vapour barrier, so it will hold moisture in if you seal the coop up.

Why the Reflectix BP24025 wins this category

It wins on the two things that survive scrutiny: cost per square foot and width.

At $29.98 for 50 square feet it works out near 60 cents a square foot, which puts it second only to the SmartSHIELD 3mm across this table and ahead of the DGSL roll at about 61 cents. The 24 in width is the more useful advantage. Most coops are framed on 16 in or 24 in centres, so a 24 in roll runs up a bay with a single staple line down each stud and no lengthways cutting. A 48 in roll makes you cut every run.

The seven layer build is the most fully described construction here. Two foil outer layers bonded to polyethylene, two bubble layers, and a polyethylene centre. It is fibre free, which matters in a coop where dust already gets into everything and hens will peck at any loose material.

Living with the Reflectix BP24025

Fit furring strips before you fit the foil. One inch by 2 in battens screwed to the studs give you the air gap the reflective face needs, and they also give you something solid to staple into.

Tape every cut edge with foil tape as you go. An open bubble edge is a dry warm cavity with a foil roof, which is close to ideal mouse accommodation, and once they are in you cannot get them out without stripping the material off.

Then cover the face. Thin plywood, hardboard or half inch hardware cloth screwed over the foil stops birds pecking at it, and it stops the layers separating where the flock rubs past.

The listing tells you very little. No thickness, no fire rating, and no reflectivity percentage. It says the foil layers reflect most of the heat that hits them and leaves it there. Why the SmartSHIELD 3mm suits a whole roof

Because it is the cheapest material here per square foot, and it comes in the widest useful format. The roll itself is $57.95, so it is not the cheapest thing to buy. It is the cheapest coverage.

One hundred square feet for $57.95 is about 58 cents a square foot, which beats Reflectix at roughly 60 cents, the DGSL roll at about 61 cents and the SmartSHIELD 5mm at about 70 cents. On a roof that is the number that decides the job, because roofs are where the area adds up.

Why the DGSL Bubble Foil Roll is the budget pick

Because $11.99 is the lowest price on this page and the roll is sized for the job most people actually have.

Very few keepers set out to line an entire coop. The usual problem is one wall, the one facing the prevailing wind, where the birds sit closest to cold plywood. At 23.6 in by 10 ft this roll covers roughly 20 square feet, which is a 4 ft by 5 ft panel. That is one wall, and there is nothing left over to store.

Why the SmartSHIELD 5mm earns the fire rating pick

Coop fires are usually electrical, and a heat lamp is the most common cause. A bulb falls, or dust builds on the fitting, and dry bedding does the rest. If you are going to run one, the material lining the walls around it should be the least flammable thing you can buy.

Because the places that leak the most heat in a coop are rarely flat plywood walls. They are the gap around a pop door, the frame of a vent, the thin metal of a prefab panel, and the door that no longer sits square.

None of those take a stapled bubble roll well. This one peels and sticks, so it bonds to metal, plastic and painted frames where a staple gun has nothing to bite into. The 0.4 in closed cell rubber foam core is also much thicker than anything else here, so it does a real job as a draught seal as well as a reflective layer.

The B1 flame retardant rating is worth noting on a product that often ends up near a fitting. It is not the Class A the SmartSHIELD 5mm cites, and we would not treat the two as equivalent, but it is more than the Reflectix and DGSL rolls state.

The rated range of minus 20 C to 160 C also means it will not soften on a metal panel in July.

Living with the BXI Foam Roll

Clean the surface properly first. Coop timber and metal collect dust and grease from feathers, and adhesive backing on a dirty surface lets go within a season. Wipe down, let it dry fully, then peel and stick.

Measure the opening before you commit. At 0.4 in thick this will foul a tight pop door track or a vent louvre if you fit it inside the opening rather than around it. Apply it to the surround, not the moving part.

Accept that it is permanent. Rubber foam adhesive bonds hard, and pulling it off a painted panel usually takes the paint with it.

Where the BXI Foam Roll falls short

The maths is the problem. Seventy eight inches by 13 in is about 7 square feet, and $34.99 for that is close to $5 a square foot. Against the SmartSHIELD 3mm at roughly 58 cents, that is around eight times the material cost. Anyone who buys this expecting to line a coop with it will be badly out of pocket.

The 13 in width makes it worse. Lining a 4 ft wall with 13 in strips means four runs and three seams for every wall, and every seam needs foil tape.

The reflectivity is undefined too. The listing gives no figure at all, only the temperature range, so there is nothing to compare with the 95% claims on the SmartSHIELD rolls. Buy it for what it is, which is a patch material with a good adhesive and a thick core.

For one narrow job. If you have a single thin panel that feels cold to the hand, this is the only bubble roll here that publishes a core thickness at all, at 6 mm, and it states a fire rating, in a roll small enough to use up in an afternoon.

The 6 mm double bubble core is the substance of it. A thicker core holds a bigger trapped air volume between the two foil facings, so the material does more on its own than a thin bubble roll does before you even think about the gap behind it.

The B2 fire protection rating is the other reason to consider it. The Reflectix and DGSL listings state nothing, so if a rating matters to you and the SmartSHIELD 5mm is out of budget, this is the middle option. Be clear that B2 is not Class A, and it is not a licence to hang a heat lamp nearby.

The listing states it ships folded, so unpack it early. Lay it flat somewhere warm for a day before you fit it, and it will relax a good deal. It will not fully recover. Fold lines compress the bubble core along the crease, and a compressed bubble is a bubble that has lost the air it was holding.

Fit it over battens as with any foil product. The adhesive pads will hold it to the battens, but on damp or dusty coop timber they slip, so add staples along the top edge if you want it to stay put through a winter.

Tape the cut edges. A double bubble core has two cavities for mice rather than one.

The folded packing works directly against what you are buying. The main advantage over the cheaper roll is core thickness, and creases are exactly the thing that reduces core thickness.

How we compared these coop insulation rolls

Every roll here is foil over a core, so the differences that matter are narrower than the listings suggest.

We worked out price per square foot from the stated roll size, because that is the only number that lets you compare a 20 square foot roll against a 200 square foot one. We looked at core construction, at stated fire rating, and at what fixings each listing actually includes, since a roll with no staples or tape has a hidden cost attached. Then we asked the question that decides everything, which is how easily each material can be battened out to leave an air gap on the reflective face.

Where a listing states a claim we cannot verify, we say so and leave it as the maker's claim.

The air gap is the whole specification

Why foil does nothing pressed flat

Heat moves three ways. Conduction through solid contact, convection through moving air, and radiation across space. Foil is very good at the third one and does nothing useful about the first.

Press a foil face against plywood and you have created a conduction path. Heat crosses the contact, ignores the shiny surface, and carries on. The reflective property needs an air space in front of it to work against. That is the mechanism, and it is why two people can fit the same roll and get completely different results.

How much gap you actually need

Three quarters of an inch is the figure most manufacturers of reflective products specify, and it is easy to hit with 1 in by 2 in furring strips screwed to the studs or rafters.

Fix the battens first, then run the foil over them and staple into the battens. The bubble or foam core gives you a second thin insulating layer, and the gap gives you the reflective one.

If you are lining a roof, the gap goes on the underside where the heat is arriving from. If you are lining a wall against winter cold, the gap goes on the coop side, facing the birds.

What actually matters after the gap

Price per square foot, not price per roll

The sticker price is misleading. The DGSL roll at $11.99 is the lowest price on this page, and at roughly 20 square feet it ties the MRPAPA as the smallest of the five full rolls here, so it works out at about 61 cents a square foot. The SmartSHIELD 3mm is $57.95 and covers 100 square feet, which is about 58 cents and the cheapest material here.

Two products break the pattern badly. The MRPAPA is the same 24 in by 10 ft size as the DGSL and costs $24.99, which is near $1.27 a square foot, and you are paying that premium for a thicker 6 mm core and a stated B2 rating. The BXI covers only about 7 square feet for $34.99, close to $5 a square foot, so treat it as patch material for a pop door surround or a vent frame and nothing more.

Fire rating, and when it matters

If you run a heat lamp or any mains appliance in the coop, the rating stops being a footnote. The SmartSHIELD 5mm cites a Class A rating and ASTM C1313. The MRPAPA states B2 and the BXI states B1. Those are not the same scale as Class A, and we would not treat them as equivalent.

The safer answer is to not run a heat lamp at all, but if you are going to, put the highest rated material near it.

Edges, tape and pecking

Seal every cut edge with foil tape. An open bubble edge is a mouse nest waiting to happen, and taped edges also stop the foil layers peeling apart over a few seasons.

Cover anything the birds can reach. A shiny surface at head height attracts pecking, and shredded foil is sharp. Plywood or half inch hardware cloth over the face solves it.

Insulation without ventilation makes things worse

This is the mistake that costs birds their combs. Foil is a vapour barrier. Line a coop with it, seal the gaps, and the moisture the hens produce has nowhere to go, so it condenses on the cold surfaces and the humidity inside climbs.

High humidity plus cold air is what causes frostbite. Dry cold is far easier on a chicken than damp cold, which is why an uninsulated, well vented coop usually beats an insulated sealed one.

Cut or open a vent above roost height before you insulate, not after. Air should leave over the birds' heads, never across them.

Final recommendation

Reflectix BP24025 is the pick for most coops. At about 60 cents a square foot it is close to the cheapest material here, the 24 in width drops into a standard stud bay without a lengthways cut, and the listing describes a seven layer build with two bubble layers between the two foil faces.

If you are lining a whole roof, the SmartSHIELD 3mm is the better buy, because 100 square feet at about 58 cents is the lowest material cost on this page and the 48 in width covers ground fast. For one cold wall or a single nest box run, the DGSL Bubble Foil Roll is the cheapest way in at $11.99 and it includes 60 self adhesive pads. If a heat lamp is going in the coop, the SmartSHIELD 5mm is the only roll here with a Class A rating behind it, and that is what you are paying $139.95 for.

Questions people ask before buying

Does foil insulation work if I staple it flat to the coop wall?

Barely. A radiant barrier reflects heat that arrives as radiation, and radiation only crosses an air space. Pressed against plywood, the foil face is in direct contact with the wood, so heat moves through by conduction and the reflective property does almost nothing. Fit furring strips or thin battens first, then fix the foil over them so the shiny face has a gap of at least three quarters of an inch. That single step is the difference between a working install and a decorative one.

What R value does chicken coop insulation need?

R values on foil products describe a tested assembly with a specified air space, not the roll on its own, so comparing them between listings is not a like for like exercise. The SmartSHIELD 5mm carries an R17 figure in its own listing with no assembly detail given, and we would not plan a build around it. For a backyard coop the useful target is not a number at all. Keep the birds dry, out of moving air at roost height, and keep a permanent vent open above them. Dry hens with dry bedding handle cold far better than warm damp ones.

Will insulating my coop stop frostbite?

Not on its own, and it can make frostbite more likely if you seal the coop while you do it. Comb and wattle frostbite is driven by moisture in the air, not by air temperature alone, and hens put out a surprising amount of water vapour through breathing and droppings. Foil is a vapour barrier. If you line the walls and leave no vent, that vapour condenses on the cold surfaces and the humidity inside climbs. Add or enlarge ventilation above roost height at the same time you insulate, not afterwards.

Can chickens peck at foil insulation?

Yes, and they will. A bright reflective surface at bird height is exactly the kind of thing a bored hen investigates, and torn foil edges are sharp while loose bubble film is a crop impaction risk if swallowed. Anything you fit inside the coop needs a covering layer over it. Thin plywood, hardboard or half inch hardware cloth screwed across the face all work. Keeping the foil in the roof space or behind an existing wall lining avoids the problem entirely.

Do mice nest in bubble foil insulation?

They do, and the open cut edge is the way in. A bubble core is a warm dry cavity with a foil roof over it, which is close to ideal rodent accommodation, and once mice are in it you cannot get them out without pulling the material off. Seal every cut edge with foil tape as you go, including the ends of each run and around any hole you cut for a vent or cable. It costs a few dollars and it is the single most useful habit when fitting any of these rolls.
